Child Neglect

This 30-minute course provides an introduction to child neglect, helping practitioners understand what neglect is, recognise the signs and indicators in young children, and appreciate the impact it can have on a child's wellbeing and development. Participants will also explore their safeguarding responsibilities, including how to respond to concerns appropriately, follow reporting procedures, and work professionally to support children and families.

Description

Neglect is the most common form of child abuse and can have significant long-term effects on a child's physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development. Early years practitioners are in a unique position to identify the early signs of neglect through their daily interactions with children and families.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Define child neglect and understand its different forms.
  • Recognise the signs and indicators of neglect in young children.
  • Understand the impact of neglect on children's development.
  • Know how to respond appropriately when neglect is suspected.
  • Follow correct recording and reporting procedures.
  • Understand the practitioner's role in supporting children and families.

Neglect is often gradual and can be difficult to recognise, but early years practitioners are uniquely placed to notice concerns. By remaining observant, recording concerns accurately, and following safeguarding procedures, practitioners play a vital role in protecting children, promoting their wellbeing, and ensuring they receive the support they need at the earliest opportunity.
