Sustained Shared Thinking

This 30-minute course introduces the key principles of Sustained Shared Thinking and explores how practitioners can use everyday play and routines to extend children’s curiosity, communication, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Participants will consider how thoughtful questioning, active listening, modelling language, and following the child’s interests can create meaningful learning opportunities.

Description

Sustained Shared Thinking is a powerful approach that helps practitioners deepen children’s learning through purposeful, responsive interactions. It happens when an adult and child work together to explore an idea, solve a problem, clarify thinking, or develop a shared understanding.

The course also encourages practitioners to reflect on their own interactions and identify practical ways to strengthen the quality of adult-child conversations within their setting.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

✔ Understand what Sustained Shared Thinking is

✔ Recognise opportunities to extend children's thinking during play

✔ Use effective questioning and communication techniques

✔ Support children's learning through meaningful interactions

✔ Reflect on their own practice and identify opportunities for improvement
